What is asphalt?
Simply put, asphalt is rock (aggregate) held together by glue (refined crude oil). These components are heated and combined to manufacture tons and tons of asphalt that we all see and drive on every day.
Why does asphalt fail?
There are several reasons for asphalt to fail or become damaged. Most common factors include poor sub-grade, heavy (truck) traffic, water intrusion, lack of maintenance (sealcoat), tree root intrusion, and poor initial design. Consult your GPM professional for a complimentary assessment of your asphalt.
What is an overlay?
An overlay is the installation of a new asphalt mat over existing asphalt. Typically, overlays are 11/2 – 2” thick and may include a protective fabric barrier between the existing and new asphalt. Properly maintained, asphalt overlay can add 10 -15 years to most asphalt surfaces.
Is all asphalt the same?
No. Asphalt mix designs can vary greatly depending upon aggregate size and oil specification. Choosing the correct asphalt mix can significantly affect the life of your project. Consult you GPM professional to select the best asphalt mix design for your property.
